Online Trauma Therapy: How Counselling From Home Can Help You Heal

By Anne Heaton-Armstrong · 28 October 2026 · 5 min read

Trauma can shape how we feel, think and relate to others long after the event itself has passed. Many people carry its effects quietly for years — through anxiety, low mood, difficulty trusting others, or a sense of being stuck. Trauma therapy offers a safe, confidential space to understand those effects and begin to move forward, and for many people online trauma counselling makes that first step easier to take.

What is trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy is talking therapy that focuses on the impact of distressing experiences — whether a single event or something that happened repeatedly over time. Rather than forcing you to relive painful memories, the work moves at your pace. Together we build safety and stability first, then gently process past experiences, examine recurring patterns and explore how they show up in your relationships and daily life.

I am an integrative practitioner with additional training in trauma and psychological first aid. My approach is rooted in relational, psychodynamic, narrative and existential theories, combining insight-driven talking therapy with practical techniques you can use between sessions.

Why online trauma counselling can feel safer

For people who have experienced trauma, feeling safe is essential. Speaking from your own home — somewhere familiar and under your control — can make it easier to relax and talk openly. There is no unfamiliar waiting room, no travel, and no need to compose yourself before a journey home afterwards.

Online sessions also give you more control over the environment: you can sit where you feel comfortable, keep a blanket or a cup of tea nearby, and take a moment to yourself as soon as the session ends.

Signs you might benefit from trauma therapy

You don't need a diagnosis to seek support. People often reach out when they notice intrusive memories, feeling constantly on edge, avoiding certain places or people, difficulty sleeping, emotional numbness, or reactions that feel out of proportion to the situation. If something from your past still feels heavy, it is worth talking about.
