Managing Anxiety: Signs It Might Be Time to Talk to a Counsellor
By Anne Heaton-Armstrong · 10 June 2026 · 5 min read
Everyone feels anxious from time to time. It is a natural response to stress and uncertainty. But when worry becomes constant, or starts to shape the choices you make each day, it can be helpful to talk to someone.
Common signs of anxiety
Anxiety can show up as persistent worry, difficulty sleeping, a racing heart, tension, irritability or trouble concentrating. Some people notice they are avoiding situations, places or conversations. Others experience panic attacks, phobias or compulsive behaviours that feel hard to control.
When to seek support
If anxiety is affecting your work, relationships, sleep or enjoyment of life, counselling may help. You don't need to wait until things feel overwhelming — reaching out early often makes change feel more manageable.
How counselling helps
In therapy we work together to understand what triggers your anxiety, how it shows up for you and what keeps it going. From there, we can develop practical strategies and a gentler relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings.
I also work with depression, grief and loss, trauma, parenting concerns and neurodiversity, recognising that anxiety often overlaps with other experiences.
