How Counselling Helps Anxiety: What Actually Happens in Anxiety Therapy

By Anne Heaton-Armstrong · 7 October 2026 · 5 min read

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek counselling. It might show up as constant worry, a racing mind at night, panic, physical tension, or avoiding situations that feel overwhelming. Counselling for anxiety helps you understand what is driving those feelings and gives you tools to respond to them differently.

Understanding where anxiety comes from

Anxiety rarely appears out of nowhere. It can be linked to stress and burnout, life transitions, relationships, past experiences or long-held beliefs about ourselves. In sessions we explore these roots with insight-driven talking therapy, so the anxiety starts to make sense rather than feeling random and uncontrollable.

Practical tools for everyday life

Understanding is only part of it. Alongside talking, I use a range of practical techniques and exercises to help you manage worry, regulate emotions, set boundaries and cope with stressful situations. Together we set goals and track your progress so you can see the changes taking shape.

Anxiety alongside other concerns

Anxiety often travels with other difficulties such as low mood, phobias, obsessions and compulsions, impostor syndrome or the effects of trauma. Because I work integratively, I tailor the approach to your unique circumstances rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method.

Why online sessions suit anxiety

Online counselling lets you attend from a familiar, private space without the added pressure of travel. Many people find this makes it easier to be honest about what they're experiencing — and easier to keep showing up week after week.
